Taking the Excellence Award at Presdales

The Lads put in an impressive performance today and take home the EXCELLENCE award! Finalists in the tournament and third in skills, 8346A's best result yet.

On Sunday 20 March, The Lads, Team 8346A from St Helena School, participated in a regional robotics tournament held at Presdales School in Hertfordshire. Scores were improved across the board!
Let’s cast our minds back to the previous weekend - Damian travelled to Greig City Academy in London and finished as a quarter finalist in the tournament and fifth in the Robot Skills Challenge.
This time around, 8346A finished in the top three for the Robot Skills Challenge, climbing two places. And as for the elimination tournament, well, The Lads were grand finalists, taking part in an epic final match - it was the highest scoring game in the UK this season.
This event was the perfect opportunity for us to hone our skills and strategies and build upon our previous successes; we managed just that and received the Excellence Award in recognition at the event.
The Excellence Award encompasses everything relevant to the Design Award, which The Lads have been able to win twice consecutively, but also considers performance on the field in the tournament and Robot Skills Challenge.
Therefore, it is the most prestigious award presented in the VEX Robotics Competition. Not only does the recipient have to demonstrate comprehensive robot construction, programming, and strategy documentation, but they also have to be strong contenders on the field.
This is incredibly motivating for us, and we can’t wait to compete once more this coming weekend (26/03) at John Warner School in Hertfordshire. We’ll be trying to match our performance and will be working on our consistency.
Help Us Represent the UK
Fundraiser by Seb Jensen : Help The Lads represent the UK at VEX Worlds
The Lads’ fundraiser to get to the States is now up to an incredible £1,156! We can’t quite believe the immense support we’ve been lucky enough to receive and we’re so grateful for each and every contribution. Let’s keep going, shall we?
In school, we’ve had the support of our science faculty; there are a number of fundraising activities being coordinated over the coming weeks. Sweet sales have been taking place at break and students are able to bring in a pound to help support us as well as enjoy a treat.
We would like to give our thanks to everyone who has offered their support - we cannot make this journey without you.
Looking Ahead
We’re looking forward to competing with our other St Helena School teams as well as others from across the region this coming weekend. We’ll be heading to John Warner School on Saturday for yet another tournament.
That looks to be our final regional event of the season for now. Then we’ll be turning our attention to the UK National Championships in Telford and subsequently to the 2022 VEX Robotics World Championship.
Of course, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.
Many thanks,
Seb Jensen and Damian Rusecki from The Lads
